The Enchantress Riot Zine intends to make it possible for queer women to manifest strength, justice, love and fulfilment in their lives, in the face of an adversary world. It is about celebrating raw feminine power, nurturing oneself and opening communication with one’s own spirit and with the spirits of the Earth. It approaches ancient folk magic through a modern political context, using witchcraft not only as a means to personal empowerment, but also as a form of activism for social, ecological, queer and feminist justice.
The aim of the Enchantress Riot Zine is to find spiritual methods to address the unique challenges faced by queer women with courage and strength, and to go against the grain of capitalist consumerism, which is increasingly and severely eroding our connection to the Earth, instead regenerating our connection with the wilderness. All of the spells in this zine are vegan, encouraging us to live in resonance with non-human animals, and unlearning the notion of human supremacy over nature.
Each page of the zine is composed of original Risograph prints, which I created using my own ink illustrations. This zine is very much limited addition, as I only rarely have access to a Risograph printer (I only printed 40 copies of the first edition)! The zines are bound by hand using a kettle-stitch bookbinding technique, sized just under A5, 50 pages, and includes 20 illustrated spells, written for an audience of queer women, based on my own experiences and what I myself find empowering and useful. The spells have all been tried and tested, and include instructions that are beginner-friendly but also go into depth.
The types of spells in this zine include candle magic, kitchen witchery, moon magic, poppets and sachets, spell jars and more. Some of the spells in the zine include: A recipe for full moon water to manifest strength; An enchanted sachet to protect oneself from men; A candle spell for justice; A ritual to heal and let go of lost love; A recipe for sun-water tea to create inner peace; A sapphic sex magic ritual; A Turkish bean recipe to manifest prosperity; An enchanted oil for healing; A poppet to honour and bless your cat; A recipe for vegan rose cookies to attract queer love, and more!
