Menstruation cycles are associated with the gendered discrimination women may face, and having or not having a period can have a huge bearing on how women are treated (including women who don't have periods, e.g. trans women, being discriminated against). When women become pregnant and stop having periods, they are treated as less able to participate in public life, and when they stop having periods due to menopause, they are treated as old, and no longer sexually attractive. My hopes with this painting series was to create an atmosphere of empowerment for my female audience; the “Uprising” piece in particular depicts a woman embracing her freedom.
